Kumiko Takahashi, who can best be described as a chanson singer, started
her career by singing "Gin-Pari (Silver Paris)", and has since
broadened her repertoire to encompass many styles of music, even long-forgotten
Japanese popular songs. Her art thus transcends both time and space, singing
of light and darkness, the sublime and the lewd, and pleasure and death
in a word, the world of the chanson. This modern songstress, accompanied
by two pianos, will transform ACM Theatre into a maze of pleasure.

Writer / Director: Hirohisa Hasegawa
Performers:
Gekidan ACM, Masakatsu Toriyama, Ken Kuboi, Yuji Ihara (Gekidan Kara-gumi)
The long-awaited new play by ACM Theatre's resident playwright, Hirohisa
Hasegawa. Antarctica -- the "corolla continent" -- is a mysterious
white land that long was able to fend off any human contact. Buried by a
2000-meter-deep coat of ice, it spends almost half of each year in sheer
darkness, untouched by the rays of the sun. Larger than either Australia
or Europe, Antarctica contains at its center the southern point of the axis
around which the earth rotates that is, the South Pole. The average
year-round temperature in the polar vicinity is only -55 degrees Celsius
(-67 degrees Fahrenheit).
In January 1912, three expeditionary teams from different nations reached
the South Pole. As if preordained, each team was made up of five men. One
team won the race to the pole and sped back, while another got there only
to realize in utter disappointment that they had been beaten. As for the
other team, well ... come and find out what happened.

The performance has been canceled owing to the troop's reasons. We thank you for your understanding of
these circumstances.
One of the goals of ATM is to serve as the wellspring for dramatic activity
in the city. The ACM Theatre thus has put on the Theatre Festival Mito each
year for productions by groups in around Mito city. This year, however,
we have decided to tear down the boundaries of genre and geography and are
proud to present a modern dance company led by Ms. Kyoko Hagiya, the dramatic
troupe Gekidan Kara-gumi with a play produced by Ken Kuboi (Gekidan Kara-gumi
member), and the Mito Children's Drama Troop, whose growth in recent
years has exceeded all expectations.
YOMU KOTOBA (PLAY TO THE GALLERY)
The ACM Theatre has started a series of reading sessions by members of the
Gekidan ACM, allowing them to reach out to their
audience even when no plays
are currently running. Having already selected some of the plays, skits
and poems to be read aloud, the troupe members are busily preparing the
costumes and movements to be used during the reading sessions. The plan
is to hold one script reading a month, each time at a different location
around the ATM complex. The atmosphere ought to be relaxed and enjoyable.
No admission fee will be charged to the readings. If you would like to have
the troupe members read your favorite play, poem or script, feel free to
contact us in person at the counter of the entrance hall, or send a postcard
to "Yomu Kotoba Requests," ACM Theatre, Mito Geijutsukan (Art
Tower Mito), 1-6-8 Goken-cho, Mito-shi 310.
Calls can be made to (029)227-8123, and faxes should be sent to (029)227-8130.
Dial those numbers to inquire about performance times as well.
