Conductor: Peter Phillips

The Tallis Scholars was founded by Peter Phillips in 1973. A mixed-voice choral group, it performs on a small scale with only two singers per part. Either women or countertenors cover the alto part.

The group has won acclaim as a top-class choral group specializing in the field of Renaissance church music. Under Peter Phillips' direction, The Tallis Scholars is known for its unstinting quest for clarity using non-vibrato voices, its unparalleled exactness of tone, its perfectly harmonized chords, and its clear melodic line. The three main pillars of the group's repertoire are English music, including works by the eponymous Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, Flemish music (included in the program at ATM in July), and the Italian composer Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. The group also actively introduces some of the better works by relatively unknown composers, including Jacob Clemens Non Papa, Frei Manuel Cardoso, and Cipriano De Rore.

Besides performing domestically in Britain, the Tallis Scholars also schedule regular tours of Europe, North America (the U.S. and Canada), Asia (Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong), and Australia. The high level of their concerts has attracted audiences of dedicated fans. They also maintain a busy recording schedule, having released many CDs through Gimell Records, which was founded specifically to make recordings of the group. More details of Tallis Scholars' discology can be found on Gimell's home page at

The group has won many significant awards for its recordings, including the 1987 Record of the Year award by the U.K. magazine Gramophone for its CD of Josquin des Pres's "Missa Pange lingua." In 1989, the French classical music magazine, Diapason, awarded The Tallis Scholars its "Prix Diapason d'Or de l'Annee" for the CD of Josquin's "L'homme arme Masses," and the same recording won the International Record Critics Award in 1990. In 1991, Gramophone gave its Early Music Record award to The Tallis Scholars for the group's recording of Palestrina's "Missa Assumpta est Maria." They have visited Japan seven times, the last time being in 1997.
