MCO to Revisit Europe, Two and a Half Years after Receiving Great Applause There -- To Be Followed by a Triumphal Return to Art Tower Mito, Maintaining the Passionate Energy of the Tour
In June 1998, the Mito Chamber Orchestra (MCO) found itself enveloped by the enthusiastic applause of European audiences.
Under the baton of Seiji Ozawa, the music created by MCO's clear, refined sound and vivid,
spontaneous ensemble captured the hearts of people in Europe,
the birthplace of classical music.
Critics gave the group unstinting praise, calling it a "world-class chamber orchestra."
Two and a half years have elapsed since then. Once again, the members of MCO are about to embark on another European tour,
accompanied by the maestro Ozawa.
This time, the ensemble has prepared a program containing four masterpieces: (1) Symphony No. 2 by Beethoven, proving to mature European audiences what MCO's dedication and passion can do;
(2) A chamber work for two flutes by Toru Takemitsu, Japan's best-known composer of classical music;
(3) "Ma mere l'oye" by Ravel, one of the favorite pieces in MCO's repertoire;
and (4) Prokofiev's "Classical Symphony," a work that allows MCO to flaunt its characteristics to the utmost.
The cities included in the tour this time will be Vienna and Florence -- both sites of well-received performances during the first tour -- as well Milan,
Paris and Munich, all world-famous musical capitals that have extended an invitation to the group.
The name of Mito will thus ring sonorously throughout the world.
The climax of the tour, in a manner of speaking, will be MCO's 45th Regular Concert to be given upon its return from Europe.
Before the passionate energy of the tour has the chance to cool down,
the same MCO sound that so captivated audiences abroad will resonate through every corner of the Concert Hall ATM,
the ensemble's home base. The concert here will no doubt lead those of us in Japan to a world of joy.
