About Shin-ichi Fukuda, the Guitarist:

Born in Osaka in 1955, Mr. Fukuda graduated first in his class from Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. He later received the highest diploma from the Chigiana Music Conservatory in Italy. Since winning the Paris International Guitar Competition, Fukuda has continued to be awarded prizes at many competitions.

He sustains an active performance schedule both in Japan and overseas, having been invited to give recitals at many of the major cities of Europe and North America. He was asked to serve as judge at the Havana International Guitar Festival in both 1994 and 1996, and played with the Cuba National Orchestra in the concert climaxing that festival, winning accolade in his performance of Toru Takemitsu's Guitar Concerto ("Palma, towards the Rainbow").

In December 1996, Fukuda performed with the NHK Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Charles Dutoit in a concert celebrating the 10th anniversary of Tokyo's Suntory Hall, playing the famous "Aranjuez" Guitar Concerto by Rodrigo, to great acclaim. He often performs jointly with well-known musicians across a wide variety of genres, including the flutists Patrick Galois, Shigenori Kudo, and Aurel Nicolet, the violinists Ivrie Gitlis and Katsuya Matsubara, the guitarist Eduardo Fernandez, and the jazz guitarist Katsumi Watanabe.

In the past few years, Fukuda has broken new ground in the performance of 19th century guitar music using period instruments. Meanwhile, he has also taken up the challenge of debuting new jazz and rock works, making progress in his continuing quest to chart unexplored territory for the acoustic guitar. Last February, he gave a solo recital at ATM, playing a broad repertoire that stretched from the baroque to the modern era, captivating his listeners.
