Opening Fanfare (Dance performance)
The opening of Daniel Buren Exhibition will be celebrated by a
collaboration between music and dance; composer
Toshio Nakagawa,
inspired by Buren's work, has created a new fanfare piece, and
Didier Théron Company
of France will give an impromptu dance performance, expressing an
elegant and dynamic joy.

Interview, "With Daniel Buren"
The totality of Daniel Buren's art can not be captured in a few words of
explanation. The artist will be interviewed, and his art is discussed
from various viewpoints.

Buren's flags, "Rainbows" will be hoisted in the arcade of Minami-machi
3 chome, Mito City (a section along National Highway 50 that passes
near the north gate of Mito Station and Art Tower Mito, halfway
between the station and the museum).

"Today's Art Space" ( A series of talk shows in four installments)
Artists are working in various kinds of space, from which they are
inseparable in any case. This symposium will be held to reconfirm this
fundamental truth and to understand better and contemplate the
significance of "space," artists' targets and Daniel Buren's activity.

The speakers examine expression of space by historic works of art.
In particular, they consider what "space" means in art, while newly
discussing the space of European perspective, pictorial space in
modern times after Cezanne and the difference in spatial
expression between the East and West.

What thought or process does architecture or urban planning follow?
How does it change real space? What does the change of space mean
in any artist's project? While referring to Daniel Buren's works of
public art, the speakers deal with the relation
between real space and art space, between art and urban space or
between art and society and problems involved.

At present, new technology is changing our space. Electronic
operation makes our visible space into a complicated fabric of
images, which is overlaid with a space of invisible
information circuits. How are real space and artistic varieties of
space being transformed in this changing environment? Also, the
speakers consider what kind of space art should try to realize in the
age of technology characteristic of the last years of the
twentieth century.

Gallery concert 1 "Two Minimal Pieces"
In the gallery, the audience will hear to two pieces for two pianos, which
have been respectively produced by two contemporary composers, i.e.,
Gavin Bryars (England / 1943-), who creates a space of quietude, and
Michael Neiman(England / 1944-), who creates an emotional dance able
space. The spatial nature of Buren's work is shown plainly with the
contrast between these musical pieces, which are called post minimal.

Gallery concert 2 "French Electric"
In the gallery, the audience will be able to enjoy short pieces for cello
by Alan Gaussinand Karen Tanaka,
two Paris-based composers whose
clear and fine sounds undoubtedly indicate French peculiarities, and
another work for cello and live electronics, which has newly been
commissioned to Karen Tanaka.
The signal for starting the concert is an electronic buzz designed by
Alan Gaussin.
